Journalism Students Investigate Goat Gate

Eleanor and Sophie, third year students studying BA (Hons) in Journalism and Edinburgh Napier University have chosen to delve into the story surrounding our wild goats as their project.

There is lots to delve into; change of land ownership and Benny Higgins chairing the Boards of both the sellers and buyers, a buyout helped by rewilding charity cash, management of a Natura 2000 site that makes no mention of wild goats, lack of Scottish political will to back local people`s concern for their wild goats, the ethics of mass culling sentient vertebrates, the lack of a closed season for killing wild goats, the complete lack of an overall plan for the sustainable management of this ancient and culturally and biologically important herd of wild goats ... etc. etc.

Of course, their task will be to assess a balance of perspectives, taking views from all sides but landowners have to date been reluctant to talk and to disclose information.

We wish Eleanor and Sophie great success in fulfilling the aims of their project. It is excellent that two young people have risen to the challenge of getting into the finer grain of the controversy that surrounds the conservation
